Top style tip: add a scarf to your summer outfit
Monday, October 19, 2009 at 10:30AM

So today I'm wearing a high waisted black pencil skirt, white shoestring strap blouse and white studded sandals. Pretty simple, right? But then I added a blue and white Hermes printed scarf and voila! Instant outfit that kept its simplicity while adding a touch of ... something, you know?
Scarves aren't just for winter. Invest in a few various colour combos and wear with a simple jeans and tee or pants and singlet and it's a really easy way to update your look while not breaking the bank. Like Sarah Michelle Gellar here, in her first outing since having her baby. She's tricked up her jeans with a gold studded black thin scarf and black heels.
Remember, keep the scarf thin, no woolly big pieces, and make sure the colours go with the colours in your outfit somewhere.
Wear this weekend: Ellen Pompeo

So she's just had a baby, but you wouldn't know it! Bird-like-framed Ellen Pompeo goes shopping at Whole Foods in LA in this coolly casual outfit.
You've got: The white singlet, the ballet flats.
You might have: The baggy boyfriend jeans, but any jeans will work this look, so they're easy to substitute. Cuff the bottoms for extra casual points.
You need: A long, non-fashiony, check shirt. One that isn't fitted and that you didn't get at Bardot or Dotti. More a man-style shirt that looks great loose and will work over everything this summer from jeans to denim shorts or a dress.
Jennifer Love Hewitt teaches us a thing or two about black

Black is fabulous, isn't it? I love the way it makes you feel slimmer and gives you that instant chic feeling. But there was one thing I learnt when I first started doing tv appearance and getting my pic taken to be published: don't wear a big black shapeless thing if you're going to be on telly or be photographed in it. 'Cause it's shapeless and there's no definition in photos so you'll end up just looking bigger than you actually are. If wearing black, keep it sleek and tight.
How lovely and glowing is Jennifer's skin though? Dewy, fresh and barely there makeup. Much better than when she wore a full set of eyelashes playing tennis in her bikini and heeled wedges!
How to wear: yellow. Thanks Anne Hathaway.

Look! It's true! I told you you could wear yellow even if you're super pale! In fact, it's even quite flattering. I do suspect though, that you may have to be a brunette to pull this colour off. A blonde may get washed out. But no matter, it's still a breakthrough. All those years of ditching the yellow on the sale racks (cause they're always left, aren't they) are gone. Keep your yellow dark though ladies. Not quite mustard - have never been a fan of wearing mustard - more a rich, dark yellow that somehow gives warmth and light to your skin and a spring to your step.
I do believe Anne Hathaway is breaking free of that boring, conventional cloud which has surrounded her for so long. I think it's the new, straight hair. Sometimes ladies, you need stick straight or messy curls to give yourself a freshness. The Bold and the Beautiful blowdries are nice, but can get old hat and even aging on some of us. Amazing what new hair can do.
The power of lipstick

Look at what red lipstick does! Wow! It turns you into a completely different person. This is a great example of how new, fresh makeup can completely change your look. If you've never done the red lipstick thing, this shot of Hilary Duff will surely change your mind.
Yes, it's Hilary Duff. Surprised? So was I. But that's the power of the lippie.
About the cardigan.
I'd rather not talk about it, but it's clear I must. A few posts down I patted Janet Jackson on the back for elegantly pulling off a cardigan at NY Fashion Week. Hilary hasn't been shopping at the same cardigan store I'm afraid. A leopard print, mumsy shaped, button up over tights isn't going to be sexy no matter what push up bra you're trying to flog. If she'd belted it on the other hand ...
