Sarah Hyland's vampy makeover
Thursday, October 18, 2012 AT 10:20 AM

Someone's got a new look!

Where are the pretty curls? The soft makeup? The sweet dresses?

Looks like Sarah Hyland wanted a change, and I think it looks pretty damned good. Sometimes you need to go against type, you know? You can always go back to it, like your favourite food. But sometimes, you want to add some chilli. Ramp up the fire in your dish, sorry, outfit.

Sarah's excellent styling pairs a lovely cream blouse with a sharp, silver, very structured skirt and super pointy shoes. They show she means business. But it's the hair and makeup which is the piece de resistance. The messy updo with those dark lips and well defined eye. Don't mess with this creature, she might bite!

I think it's exactly the message she wanted to send. I love how changing your look can instantly change the public's opinion of you. No more little good girl. Now we know.

Olivia Palermo kills it in black and white
Thursday, October 18, 2012 AT 10:03 AM

Olivia Palermo is just so damned polished. What is it about women who can look like this all the time. It doesn't matter if she's walking the dog or going to a swanky function (like this here Montblanc do), the girl is groomed to within a millimetre of her life.

How does one do that? Like, all the time?

Personally, I run with a bedhead pretty much 24-7. It's my thing (and, er, Kate Moss', so I know it has good foundations).

Olivia couldn't rock a bedhead if she tried. You can just imagine her sneaking a brush into her miniscule clutch everywhere she goes just in case a hair goes astray. Me? I know my hair will go astray anyway, so I wear it messy all the time. Easy!

I do love how she does it. The black and white items here are all a different print, but she uses the colour theme to pull the outfit together. A leopard print shirt, a black pencil skirt with ornate white print on it and those excellent black/white/red shoes. It's a great lesson and shows that not everything has to exactly match. In fact, sometimes it's better if things are a little off. The fact that it's a success shows her true style colours.

Marion Cotillard in Dior
Tuesday, October 16, 2012 AT 10:27 AM

She's the first celeb to wear something from Raf Simon's debut ready-to-wear collection from Dior, and she's chosen a simple LBD. It has a lovely shape and texture to it but I'm not overly excited about it.

Those shoes on the other hand, they can grace my wardrobe any time they like!

I would have liked to see a bright clutch or something else on this outfit to pull it together.

Then she wore this pretty black and white dress by Elie Tahari with super cute, open-toe mary janes. For all those that won't do an ankle strap for fear of it cutting off your leg, this is the look to love. A strap that goes high across the foot won't cut off your leg like a proper ankle strap can, there is enough length to make it suit every body, not just the lovely Marion's.

So now you know.

Nicole's apres-gym look
Thursday, October 11, 2012 AT 1:06 PM

Here's a riddle. I'm going to the gym. I live in LA. I'm a celebrity. I'm going to get papped. My pic is going to be splashed across magazines and the internet.

How can I look ... not so ... gymmy. You know?

Go!

Right, well, that's easy. According to Nicole, tie your wet hair in a super slick bun, and add giant sunnies so nobody sees your scrubbed-of-makeup face. Then pop on your jacket du jour instead of a gym hoodie, and wear a scarf around your neck. Carry your regular day bag et voila! Nobody will even notice your tights n' trainers now, 'cause your top half looks so chic.

When bad clothes happen to good people: Ari Graynor
Wednesday, October 10, 2012 AT 9:39 AM

See, I knew this would happen!

As soon as I saw Alexa break out the overalls, I knew that some poor, unsuspecting soul who likes to be comfortable in her clothing thought 'excellent! I'm going to wear overalls too and be as cool as Alexa Chung.'

Bzzt! Wrong! For the art of carrying off a pair of overalls is a very fine art to master. Do not attempt if you're a novice folks, or you'll come off more Farmer Joe than fashionista.

Actress Ari Graynor does exactly that.

How to wear black and white, By Anja Rubik
Tuesday, October 02, 2012 AT 10:13 AM

This is a look which will stand the test of time.

Leather leggings have become an absolute staple, like a denim jean almost, and Anja Rubik works the look beautifully with a military inspired shirt and lace up booties.

Black and white is a classic pairing that, if done correctly, will always be a winner. I used to avoid the combo because it felt too waiter-ish to me, but that is only if the pieces you choose are plain. Interesting pieces means an interesting finish, full stop.

There's nothing plain or boring about this.

Three ways with ... the blouse. Olivia Palermo
Wednesday, September 05, 2012 AT 9:26 AM

It takes a chic dresser to turn a blouse into an everyday item, and Olivia Palermo has done exactly that. Switch your t-shirts for a soft, silky blouse and your outfits instantly switch it up a notch or two on that style belt. Here, Olivia shows us how it's done three ways.

1. Above. Keep things tonal and in keeping with this summer's colourful trend. A sheer aqua shirt is worn with pastel-hued, tailored shorts. She wears a cami underneath and accessorises with those very excellent bone/tan shoes. Note she doesn't even carry a bag here, lest it clash with her look. It's a day outfit but it's as polished as they come.

2. She turns it up for night by swapping to black. Black sheer blouse, black tailored shorts, same shoes. This is how to wear shorts at night without feeling like you're baring too much skin or you're too casual. It's all about the finish.

3. My favourite look, the street-style blouse. A flippy, pleated mini is made dressy with a printed blouse (tuck in! tuck in! tuck in!). It's the feature piece of the outfit. Everything else is understated and neutral. A good lesson learnt.

Is it shorts time yet? Daisy Lowe pairs hers with a swimsuit
Friday, August 24, 2012 AT 11:36 AM

Sure, the weather is a far way off being able to wear a one-piece swimsuit as a top, but just to prepare you for the coming season, here's Daisy Lowe doing her thing in a strapless red swimsuit with high waisted cut-offs and some mega chunky boots.

If you've ever tried to do the one-piece with your regular hipster shorts, you'll have realised they don't work. For some reason, too much swimsuit over the hips is unflattering. The shorts or pants or skirt or whatever you are pairing with your swimsuit needs to be high waisted. Another warning: the VPL. Be careful how tight your pants are and be sure to check out your butt before you leave the house!

On the street: Christina Hendricks
Wednesday, August 22, 2012 AT 9:43 AM

I've often wondered what Christina Hendricks wore in her down time. Those famous curves might pour easily into an ankle length evening gown, but casual clothes are not as flattering. How to get the right mix of street cred with womanly style?

She's done it perfectly.

A pair of skin-tight skinny jeans (they are still the most flattering shape, even if you're bigger than Christina, because they follow the line of your body and don't create bulk where you don't want it!) but instead of wearing with a fitted top (big no-no), she pairs them with a denim shirt - not oversized, just skimming the body perfectly - and a pair of kitten heels for some much needed lift. Not into kitten heels? I have found my perfect day shoe in the mini-wedge. It gives me height (hallelujah!) while being comfortable enough to walk for miles. My wedge trainers are my current favourite but now the sun's out I can probably switch to my Miu Miu's any day now.

A variation on this simple look would be a pastel coloured sweater, Jac + Jack make some beautiful ones, with pastel coloured jeans. Then you can zing into spring in style.

How to dress up a casual outfit, by Rihanna
Wednesday, July 25, 2012 AT 10:08 AM

Now I'm not saying you should rush to wear a bikini top whilst shopping anytime soon (or at all, for that matter), but I do admire the way Rihanna has managed to dress up a bandeau bikini top and skirt and turned it into an outfit. Something we can all apply to our casual wear with just a little attention to our accessories.

Firstly, the red lipstick instantly makes everything just that little bit more dramatic. If you haven't yet swapped your gloss for something more opaque, perhaps now is the time to try it, at least some of the time.

Secondly, the jewellery. There's tonnes of it. An assortment of rings, a snake arm band, giant hoops and a weird, cross body belly chain that probably only looks good when a pop star wears it (or indeed, when you're wearing a bikini top).

Thirdly, the nails. Long and manicured, they really complete the look.

And fourth, the structured bag. Imagine the difference in vibe if she was carrying a loose fabric beach bag? It would have led the outfit down a much more casual path. This bag is ladylike and sophisticated. It's still straw, so goes with the bikini top, but the structure makes it classic.

This is a great example of how finishing touches can turn the slant of an outfit from casual to dressed up. It's all in the detail.
