Consider burgandy the new Japenese cherry blossom of fashion.
But unlike the blossom blooming on the other side of the world, around about now, burgandy has been coming through more gradually over the past three years, vouching to make its return slowly instead of hitting us full-pelt overnight.
We first saw it spearheaded by beatuy brands in the form of lipstick shades like:
MAC's Chignon
MNY's Mauve-ulous (and several other fig-like shades from their coloursensational range)
Stila's Ecstasy
And then we saw it in Miu Miu shoes! From their infamous bow peep to their more current multi-strap.
This month though, it's both on and off high-street, seeping into the very essence of fashion both here and overseas.
Just last week I bought woolen opaques from Aussie retailer Country Road. The week before that, an oversized knit from Witchery and then some long leather gloves, all proudly oozing rich burgandy.
It's taking over. Not just my wardrobe, but the wardrobes of many, vis-a-vis:
(From top left, clockwise around)
Clemence Poesy
Tilda Swinton
Salma Hayek
Kate Mara
Chloe: Runway - Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Fall/Winter
Victoria Sekrier
Roberta Benteler
I personally can't believe it's taken this long for us to get over those burgandy formal/bridesmaid dresses of the early nineties. Twenty years is an unprecedented 'fashion' sentence, so Karl must have been really upset with the colours movements.
But the cold war on burgandy is now officially over. So you can go fourth and spill your dry red all you want.
