Australia's self-styled queen of vintage is the lady behind the gorgeous garypeppervintage.blogspot.com. She's made a full-time job out of blogging and selling vintage wares on ebay and is the obvious choice to ask about 2nd hand shopping in Australia.

sml

Describe the type of person who would love your blog?
I would say she's a female between 15-25 years old, who has a passion for fashion, vintage and photography.

What made you start a blog in the first place?
I started my blog the very same day I opened my online vintage store. I had just quit my job to pursue my business full-time and the idea was to document this exciting new chapter in my life, like an online diary. After a few months it quickly evolved into a personal style blog, where I would style, shoot and create mini photo shoots for my outfits.

Any perks that come with blog-stardom?!
Haha. I still have such a long way to go but just being stopped in the street by my readers is the biggest highlight for me. It's so nice meeting complete strangers who are so friendly and warm, and often know more about me than I do.

Where do you find your inspiration for outfits?
Street style blogs, people watching, a beautiful location or the vintage pieces I find. Subconsciously, I think the beautiful styling on Net-A-Porter and ASOS also help too as I'm constantly online shopping.

Do you have any style rules?
I wouldn't say I have set rules. If anything, fashion is about expressing yourself and being creative and comfortable in not only what you wear but in your own skin. Rules are there to be broken.

What are your five style signatures?
I'm just basing this on what people have told me as I still don't see my style very clearly. Pretty, feminine, colourful, simple, with a brightly
coloured lip.

What are your top three styling tips?
Less is always more. The brighter the better and always make time to go vintage shopping. The best pieces in my wardrobe are all vintage.

Do you have any favorite places to go shopping?
I'm obsessed with online shopping. My favourites are Net-A-Poter.com, Shopbop.com, ASOS, Topshop, Etsy.com and Claire Inc.com for those perfect vintage designer finds.

Do you ever look back on outfits that you wore and think, "What was I thinking??"
Oh god, ALL the time! I feel that way about what I wore last week. I'm too indecisive!

What's next in the land of Gary Pepper Vintage?
I'm planning on hiring models and in-house photographers for the store so I can have my business running while I'm not here. In terms of my blog, I plan on travelling more this year and covering the fashion weeks. I also have a few exciting collaborations in the works but unfortunately it's all top secret at the moment. I do plan on getting back to my creative side and trying my skills at videography, styling and learning more about photography.

Creator of Milk Teeths, Ashley Baluyut, has an incredible eye for hidden gems. The Orange County native frequents op shops in her area, wading through piles and piles of musty garments to find the most incredible one-off pieces. Photos of her outfits are teamed with charming posts about where she found it and where she wore it. A recent recipient of Refinery29’s Next Big Style Blogger award, don’t be surprised if you spot her front row at Fashion Week in the not-too-distant future.

When and why did you start blogging? I officially started style blogging in July last year. I wanted to dress better myself and figured that documenting what I wore would jumpstart my creative juices!

What is the story behind your blog's title? I like antiquated words and phrases and I always thought milk teeth was a cute way of saying baby teeth. Before I started style blogging, my blog was just a general diary so I came up with a title that I liked - fashion was not on my mind at all. I had to add the "s" because milk teeth'' was already taken!

What are your favourite blogs?

1.            Liebemarlene (http://www.liebemarlene.com)

2.            Bleubird Vintage http://www.bleubirdvintage.typepad.com)

3.            Junkaholique (http://www.junkaholique.com/)

4.            And many, many more!

How would you describe your personal style? Kind of all over the place! Super girly one day and really grungy and boyish the next. My only stipulation is that I have to be comfortable in everything I wear, shoes included! I'm definitely not someone who values fashion over function. As for influence, history influences my style, hands down. Old movies, TV shows, even literary characters…

What are your earliest memories of your love for fashion? I remember being 11-12 and being really into designer name brands for some reason. This is bizarre because I don't care for name brand or designer things at all now, but there was definitely a period of time when I would flip through my mum's Vogues and soak up all I could about what was going on in fashion. Even earlier than this I remember dressing up in my mother’s old clothes - but I think everyone does that!

Who is your style icon? A little clichéd, but Audrey Hepburn. She just oozes style. Even when she wore jeans and a button-up shirt she looked amazing. Looking good in such simple clothing is the ultimate style test, in my opinion.

What are your top three styling tips? A slouchy men's cardigan goes with anything and everything. Red lipstick can add just enough intrigue to a simple outfit to save it from being boring. Brightly coloured or patterned socks peeking out from your pant leg can add just the right touch of wit to an outfit. I love when I see seemingly sombre dressed people and then catch a glimpse of a bright sock when they sit down.

Who are your top three favourite designers? Miuccia Prada, Sonia Rykiel and Erin Fetherston

What's your trend forecast for the coming season? Buttoned-up collars, penny loafers, and teddy-boy style. At least, that's what I'll be in to!

This flame-haired beauty takes her style cues from the '50s, wearing felt hats, pastel stockings, silk camisoles and ballooning dresses day in and day out. The talented illustrator also doodles for Lula and Flaunt and, together with her business partner Elvia Lahman, sells vintage-inspired lingerie (thelovedone.net) on the side. See hannahandlandon.blogspot.com for a world full of prettiness.

Tell me a little bit about yourself...
I live in Brooklyn with my husband Landon, and our two kitties Pippin and Bobo. My blog is mostly an archive of photographs taken by either me or Landon along with a few posts on inspiring women I've encountered. The Loved One is a business I started with Elvia in 2009. We initially began as a vintage wholesale company and introduced our first collection of lingerie in early 2011. Shortly after releasing our lingerie line, we had two pop-up shops before settling into our first permanent location in Pasadena where we sell a mix of vintage clothing and our own TLO collection.

When did you start blogging?
I began an early form of blogging back in 2001 when I was a teenager (on a website called LiveJournal). I don't think there was any reason beyond the desire to be heard and find other like-minded people with whom I could relate (actually met my husband Landon on there back in 2004!). I suppose now it's just become a habit to blog, and so much good has come of it - wonderful friends, job opportunities - that I can't stop!

The photography on your blog is beautiful. Do you take the photos yourself?
Unless credited otherwise all photos are taken by Landon and myself. In coming months, you will see more photographers pop up on the blog as The Loved One pursues a new project that includes monthly collaborations with various photographers.

Your photos have a really distinctive style. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind them?
Our photographs are very much "documentary style". Almost all of what you see is what's naturally occurring in front of the camera. I suppose then, that our inspiration stems from our surroundings.

What are your inspirations?
I admire anybody who has followed their own path and vision. Having said that I am very inspired by the life and style of [model/actress turned author/photographer] Dare Wright!

What's your rule to dress by?
Stay true to yourself, wear what you think and feel looks best on you regardless of trends!

What trend do you hope dies?
Haha, I've not really thought of it but I suppose if I had to pick one thing that I'd be happy never to see again it would be cut-off denim shorts worn with black tights! But hey, if it makes you happy...

If you could only wear clothes from one decade, what would it be?
This decade, because I get to wear clothing from all the previous decades! Sorry that's not much fun, I reckon I'd choose either the Edwardian era or the 1960s (drastically different aesthetics, I realise). I love the '60s hair and Edwardian attention to detail, high waists and elegant draping.

Any exciting future plans or ventures in the works?
We're working on our next collection (to be released this Valentine's season) right now with a very special guest collaborator! I'm really excited about this upcoming collection, it's a bit more sophisticated and detailed then what we've worked on before!

My Style Pill offers a daily dose of style inspiration courtesy of Christine Cameron, a personal stylist, wardrobe consultant, blogger and mag editor in New York. A self-confessed jeans person, Christine walks the line between high street and high fashion. You’re just as likely to see her wearing something from Topshop, Zara and Forever 21 as you are a pricier designer thread. We love her relaxed approach to ensembling, mixing things up with a leopard print belt or armful of clunky bracelets. She has a particular penchant for “shopping her closet”, which means piecing together entirely new and fresh outfits from what she has. Now there’s some style advice our credit card can use!
 cc1

How did My Style Pill come to life?
I needed a creative outlet so I thought, why not start a blog? I just wanted to share and talk about the things in fashion that I loved. About two years ago, I started integrating outfit posts into the mix.

What are the best aspects of running your own blog?
Running my own blog has many great perks - everything from running around to press events and appointments to photo shoots for brands I’m working for to fun outfit photo sessions with friends. It changes all the time! The hardest is keeping everything organised during busy periods, staying on track and keeping everything in perspective.

How do you stay motivated to blog all the time?
I love what I do so that is a natural motivation in itself. I work as a personal stylist as well so often times I might feature how to wear a certain style or look a client has asked about. But basically I always seem to have new things or ideas to post about depending on what inspires me that day.

How would you describe your personal style?
I would say classic with a twist! I live by my mother's rules of thumb: 1. Don't buy it unless it is to-die for. 2. If it is to-die for, make sure it goes with at least five things in your closet. Live by this and getting dressed should become a bit easier and more streamlined.

Tell us how you dress up for a summer black-tie event?
Short and strapless with a stellar statement necklace and a tuxedo blazer for later to stay warm yet chic if the temperature drops.

As a personal stylist, what’s the most fun job you’ve ever taken on?
Starting a client's wardrobe from absolute scratch and building out every season with new pieces until it was complete.

Who is your favourite person you have personally styled?
I honestly don't have a favourite - they are all so unique and different, it's wonderful!

Blogger of the week: Amanda Shadforth

Oracle Fox is the brainchild of Amanda Shadforth. Hailing from the Sunshine Coast, she turns surfer girl into a fashion muse, creating shoots inspired by her love for boho and rock ‘n’ roll. Her blog showcases her amazing wardrobe and documents her girl-crushes on Isabel Lucas and Abbey-Lee Kershaw! There are also sections dedicated to her DIY projects and adventures abroad. Our favourite post is on her gorgeous wedding in Bali, in which she wears the most beautiful Sass & Bide dress made of rope and shells. We die!

OF

Why did you initially decide to start a blog? As an artist, I was always on the hunt for inspiring images for my art projects which I used to squirrel away in various notebooks and computer files. I started Oracle Fox in August 2010 as a means of artistic expression. It also allowed me to share some of my interesting finds with others, at the same time making my own artistic processes more interactive.

What is the story behind your blog's title? Can’t let the fox out the bag - it’s a secret!

If your blog had a mission statement, what would it be? Post what you love, love what you do, and be true to yourself. Only endorse products that you would wear and enjoy yourself. Be selective, you can’t say yes to everything or you will lose yourself and your creativity.  Be true to your readers and always be humble.

Have you ever been recognised or stopped by a fan of your blog? Yes! I am known locally for my artwork and my blog. Although we don’t share the same status as overseas bloggers, it is always a very humbling experience.

Describe your personal style… My personal style is always changing and evolving, I love the experimental side of fashion. I try not to lock myself in to any particular genre - as an artist I enjoy and embrace change, and I am always inspired by both the new and the old. Fashion and personal style for me is about being confident to wear whatever you like. In saying that, I describe my current style as relaxed and contemporary with an eclectic undertone.

Were you always playing dress-ups as a kid? I was actually a bit of a tomboy, but yes, I did love hiding in Mum’s closet and dressing up in her clothes! The high heels were always a challenge. All that practice has definitely paid off now!!!

What is your favourite item of clothing right now? Right now I love my oversized black sun visor. It reminds me a little bit of the ones that I saw on the Balenciaga catwalk this season.

Do you have any style rules? Last year, before I left the house I would always add one more thing! This year, as Madame Coco Chanel would say, I take one thing off.

Your style is very eclectic. Do you have any off-the-beaten-path shopping spots you love? I love exploring weekend markets, both close to my home, interstate and overseas. I also enjoy wandering down little alley ways and stumbling across random boutiques.

Mollie Stevens’ blog allaboutedie is brimming with style inspiration. A student at FBI (the former fashion college of Gary Pepper Vintage’s Nicole Warne), she’s already an industry insider with her name on the hottest door lists. She fills her blog with whimsical mood boards, featuring street style pics, new purchases and stills from her favourite movies and TV shows. We especially love her snaps from her recent trip to New York (she rubbed shoulders with Alexa Chung and Anna Dello Russo!).

Describe your blog in three words…  My life and inspiration in pictures (three extra words please?!).

How did you get into blogging? I just sort of fell into it! I am addicted to everything related to fashion, am a compulsive shopper with a never-ending wardrobe and am constantly sourcing inspiration from online. I guess I just thought why not combine all these things and start my own blog!

What do you think is the best part about blogging? The best part of blogging would have to be the amazing people you meet along the ride.

How do you stay motivated to blog all the time? To be a successful blogger, you have to be motivated, determined and on the ball. It's something that I love to do, so I don't get tired of it. I always find something to blog about and if I don't blog for a few days, I start to feel guilty.

Which five items must every woman have in her closet? I’m not really into 'wardrobe staples' – I think it’s better to purchase things that stand out, make a statement and are on trend!  But if I had to pick, I would say…

  1. A light-weight blazer - for those breezy summer nights
  2. Accessories – especially oversized sunnies and bold statement rings
  3. Nude shorts or denim cut-offs - perfect on sun-kissed skin
  4. A great cosi
  5. A maxi dress - great for beach or city, day or night, heels or flats

Who are your style heroes? Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Elin Kling, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Nicole Richie and Rachel Zoe.

Who’s your favourite emerging designer? I am a big fan of Australian label Shakuhachi. Designer Jessie White creates fun and fresh pieces. Her current collection is incredible - mustard leather panelling, weave-effect dresses, bohemian prints, nude pieces, plus bursts of neon colour. Also, a label to look out for is Zippora, which boasts edgy, wild designs!

What are your earliest memories of your love for fashion? I still remember my first copy of a fashion magazine. I was only seven and I snuck it from my mum! There I sat on my bed, getting lost in a land of fashion and beauty. I wanted everything! I wanted to leap from my pink doona cover and burst into the pages.

What is one item in your closet you can’t live without? Am I allowed to say my whole shoe collection?!

Blogger of the week: Fanny Lyckman

Sweden is home to many cool things – IKEA, H&M, Alexander Skarsgard and IM FANCY style blogger, Fanny Lyckman. Based in Stockholm, Fanny has sprung to prominence with her raw, on-trend style. Her wardrobe staples include Jeffery Campbell booties, chunky rings and layers and layers of silver chains. Fanny styles her own shoots and has her hot-as photog boyfriend capture them (we wish he would turn the camera on himself more often!).

 Fanny

Why did you initially decide to start a blog? I love clothes and fashion - and I enjoy standing in front of the camera!

What is the story behind your blog's title? Fancy was sort of my nickname in school, and i am fancy so it fits! Haha.

What are your favourite blogs? Fashiontoast, Wildfox, Oracle fox and Vintage Virgin.

Any advice for readers looking to launch their own blog? Simple - be unique.

What do you do when you're not blogging? I'm working as a store manager and a freelance stylist.

How would you describe your style? I have so many styles! A city chic with a bohemic twist.

What are some of your fave labels? The Swedish brand Acne is amazing. Isabelle Marant, Alexander Wang and Balenciaga are all my favourites at the moment as well.

What trend from the past would you like to make a comeback? Maybe the Buffalo-shoe but in some upgraded version with higher platforms and a lot of different prints. That would be awesome.
