Fashion takes a dark turn.

One of the great things that I love about big trends is that you can bet all your money on the next big trend being the exact opposite of what you spent all of your money obsessing on last season. Ergo; say goodbye to all things bright and colourful (if I hear the term 'colour blocking' one more time I'm going to poke myself in the eye and stomp on my own foot).

Mr Lagerfield himself, gave us a little nudge in the right direction last year when he sent  models in the Fall 2011 Chanel Ready To Wear and Haute Couture runway shows (pictured above) wearing dramatic and battered dresses and suits in dark and moody textures. The ready to wear show was also apparently set to the very appropriate sounds of The Cure's, The Forest.

Fall RTW 2011:

Girl of the moment Rooney Mara perfectly encapsulates this edgy dark trend with her pale skin and sharp hair styling. I love how committed Mara is to this new goth inspired look she has embraced for the press tour for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Hopefully it's not just for this role because I think this look really suits her.

Always at the forefront of the latest trend, Daisy Lowe was an early adopter of this dark trend and although I wasn't initially a fan of the mullet dress, I'm going to have to admit that I love Daisy's sullen make up that she pairs with the tuxedo jacket (it's still a mullet dress to me).

Evan Rachel Wood and Olivia Wilde takes this trend and give it a glamourous edge but Evan's nails and Wilde's scruffy hair manage to give these red carpet looks a touch of edge.

Perennially in black, model and DJ Leigh Lezarek keeps it casual with a sheer silk shirt and relaxed trousers while adorable Emily Browning makes dark and edgy, look cute in her tailored shorts and sheer pussy bow blouse; which admittedly isn't very 'goth' but I'm completely in love with her eye make up and think that she looks stunning in this picture.

Finally, the lady who seems to have undergone a diva-esque style transformation from the days of wearing cute vintage floral dresses to now only wearing clothing straight off the runway. Florence is pictured below vamping it up in who else but Chanel (RTW 2011) looking like she belongs in a Brothers Grimm re-adaptation. It's a look not many of us could pull off (particularly here in Australia) but you can't deny that the woman brings the drama and manages to look stunning while doing it.

What are your thoughts on this trend? Are you rushing out to buy a new black lipstick, a black cape and layers of lace? Or are you hanging on to your orange, cobalt blue and pink separates as if your life depends on it?

You're absolutely right CJ. When I was looking into celebrities wearing dark colours recently, none of them seemed to personify my ideals of what I perceive to be as this new dark/ goth trend. The celebrities I selected were specifically chosen because of the way in which they personify a specific idea; more specifically the theme which was present through the Chanel Fall 2011 shows which was quite apocalyptic, certainly not 'gothic' in the old sense of the word but beautiful, edgy, mysterious and with a hint of impending doom. I should have been more specific with regards to how to refer to this new 'dark' trend. It's certainly not about just wearing black or about listening to The Cure or wearing black lipstick. All these celebrities are probably the last women you can imagine bouncing around in bright colours. I'm not exactly sure what to call this trend. I'll leave that to a glossy magazine. For now I'm hoping dark/ dramatic/ new goth fits the bills somewhat?

I'm pretty sure it's Leigh Lezark. I think it's very hard to classify black as a 'trend', per se. Gothic dressing may very well be the next trend, but some of these outfits are just black. In my mind, "black" and "gothic" aren't necessarily interchangeable terms when it comes to fashion.

Yesterday I was in black head to toe (minus the lipstick), today I am in cobalt blue, pink and orange (honestly)! I also can't stand the 'colour blocking' term any longer, but do think I need to mix it up! It is still summer after all, plenty of time for black in winter. I was, however, thinking about the ease of having an entire black wardrobe,so many top fashion icons are always in black, and now looking at these images it's making me lean toward it more and more ..
