Sometimes, it's up to us to make the rules. I've never thought a maxi dress and boots look particularly good, in fact, I usually think they make one look quite dumpy. Rosie Huntington-Whitely (typing her name is so loooooooong and annoying, it's the sole reason my daughter does not have a hyphenated surname!) does it in style of course, by choosing the right boots to wear: light coloured, suede boots. They could almost pass for your feet because of the colour, which is why they work. Black boots can be too clunky so if you're going for this look, stick to nude/beige tones and a pointed toe for sophistication.

Zoe Saldana pairs her flat ankle shoe-booties with a classic, man-size white shirt tucked into a jersey skirt. She's got the balance right with the outfit and again, the nude boots blend nicely into her skintone which is perfect for a summer's day.

If you have the gumption of Selena Gomez, you can work the knee high option, which don't have to be nude if you're wearing the boots with short shorts, like Selena here. The make a t-shirt and shorts appear a little more interesting than if she were wearing them with thongs, don't you think?
